If you’ve been in the UniFi ecosystem for a while, you know how far the platform has come — but the new Network 9.1 update is a serious leap forward. We’ve been testing it here at Volk Secure, and I’ve got to say, this update brings some long-requested features and real quality-of-life upgrades that IT pros and business owners alike are going to appreciate.
One of the most exciting additions is Traffic Flows. It gives you a real-time breakdown of how data moves across your network — not just IP addresses and device names, but actual application-level visibility. Want to know which devices are eating up bandwidth on YouTube, or which VLAN is pushing unexpected traffic? You can see it immediately. This is next-level insight that turns UniFi into a true enterprise-grade networking solution, even for smaller businesses.
Another massive improvement is how UniFi is handling Quality of Service (QoS). With the new tools in 9.1, prioritizing traffic for VoIP and video conferencing is easier and more intuitive than ever. Whether you’re running Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or a custom VoIP solution like we deploy at Volk Secure, it’s now simple to ensure those services always get the priority they need — no complex rule-building required.
They’ve also added zero-touch device replacement, which is huge for anyone managing multiple switches or access points. You can now just plug in a replacement device, match its MAC address, and the controller will pull the config and settings over automatically. It’s the kind of thing that saves serious time, especially when you’re managing multiple sites or troubleshooting hardware failures.
Another area that got some love is WiFi diagnostics. The new Airview dashboard gives you real-time RF metrics, client roaming logs, and one-click scans of interference and spectrum use. It’s way easier now to pinpoint connection drops, misbehaving clients, or congested channels — especially useful when deploying high-density WiFi environments.
If you’re using fiber or SFP+ connections, the new SFP Analyzer is also a win. You get diagnostics and health metrics for fiber links, so it’s easier to troubleshoot and maintain long-haul or high-speed connections. And if your site runs with Multi-WAN, there’s now improved failover handling and monitoring, too.
They even improved the mobile experience. The UniFi app is cleaner, shows more throughput data, and lets you run quick tests right from your phone. It feels faster and gives you real visibility even when you’re off-site.
For us at Volk Secure, this update changes how we approach network design and maintenance. It gives us better tools to proactively monitor, prioritize, and secure client networks. For example, we’re now building in real-time flow views for clients who need tighter data oversight — whether it’s for compliance or just understanding how their business tech is really being used.
If you’re currently running UniFi Network 8.x, I recommend preparing to upgrade — just make sure your controller and devices are compatible. And if you’re starting from scratch, 9.1 is a great time to get in — you’ll be starting with a platform that’s more powerful and intuitive than ever.
